A door or window that will not lock is a security problem and, on a rented or insured property, often an urgent one. Most multi-point locking faults are repairable in a single visit — £80–£180 — and we treat a door that won't lock as an emergency.
A very large proportion of 'my lock has broken' calls are actually 'my door has dropped'. The lock is fine; it is simply no longer aligned with the keeps. Hinges adjusted, keeps reset, lock works.
Replacing the lock on a dropped door is expensive and pointless. Any competent fitter checks alignment before condemning the mechanism.
If you are replacing a front door cylinder, replace it with a TS007 3-star or Sold Secure Diamond rated cylinder. Cylinder snapping remains the most common method of forced entry through a UK front door, and it defeats an ordinary euro cylinder in seconds. An anti-snap cylinder costs a few tens of pounds and removes the attack entirely.
