French doors — questions we get asked
What is an offset French door?
One leaf is wider than the other. You get a wide everyday door for carrying things through, and still open both leaves in summer. It is the sensible choice on an opening around 1.5m where a symmetrical pair gives you two doors that are both slightly too narrow.
Should French doors open in or out?
Out, if the room is small and you do not want to lose floor space or sacrifice furniture placement. In, if the doors are exposed to driving rain, because an inward-opening door seals against its weather gasket more positively. Both are available.
What size opening do I need?
Measure the structural opening brick to brick and floor to lintel. A pair works from about 1200mm. Below that, look at a single door with a fixed sidelight instead.
Can I get French doors with a low threshold?
Yes. A low or level threshold is worth specifying if there is any chance of a wheelchair, a pushchair or an older resident using them. It is also a Part M requirement on new build principal entrances.
Do the doors come with the frame?
Yes — supply only means the complete set: outer frame, both leaves, hinges, locking, handles, cill if you order one, and the glazing already in.
