Handles are the most-used moving part on a window and the first thing to fail. They snap at the base, work loose on their screws, or the internal spindle strips so the handle turns without moving the mechanism.

It is one of the cheapest repairs there is — and one of the easiest to do yourself if you can identify the right part.

Getting the right handle

Three measurements decide it: the spindle length (the square bar going into the mechanism), the screw centres (distance between the two fixing screws), and the handing — left, right or universal. Espagnolette, cockspur and tilt-and-turn handles are not interchangeable.

Locking handles and safety

A key-locking handle is worth having on any ground floor or accessible window, and on any window a child can reach. It is also what many insurers assume you have. If you are replacing a non-locking handle anyway, upgrade.

Do it yourself

Genuinely straightforward: two screws, usually under a plastic cap. If you can identify the part, order it supply only and fit it in five minutes. We will tell you which handle you need whether or not you buy the fitting.

Are window handles universal?

No. Spindle length, screw centres and handing all vary. A photo from the face and the edge is enough for us to identify yours.

Can I fit a window handle myself?

Yes, it is two screws. This is one of the better DIY repairs and we are happy to supply the part on its own.

My handle turns but the window does not lock — is the handle broken?

Either the handle spindle has stripped or the mechanism behind it has failed. If the handle feels normal but nothing moves, suspect the mechanism.

Should I get key-locking handles?

On anything at ground floor or reachable, yes. Cheap, and often assumed by insurers.

Do you carry handles in stock?

Common patterns yes. Unusual or discontinued ones may need ordering — a photo tells us which you have.
