Window handle replacement

A handle that spins freely, snaps, or turns but doesn't move the lock is one of the most common window faults and one of the cheapest to fix — typically £45–£95 including the part and the visit.

What has usually gone wrong

  • Spinning handleThe spindle has sheared, or the drive is no longer engaging the gearbox. Handle replacement, sometimes with a new spindle.
  • Stiff handleUsually not the handle at all — it is the gearing binding, often because the sash has dropped and the locking cams are fighting the keeps. Fix the hinge and the handle frees up.
  • Snapped handleMetal fatigue, or someone forced it while the sash was jammed.
  • Loose handleScrews working loose in a soft frame. Sometimes needs a thread repair rather than just tightening.

Getting the right replacement

Window handles are not universal. The variables are the spindle size (usually 7mm on windows), the spindle length, the screw centres (43mm and 20mm are both common), the handedness, and whether it is an inline or cranked handle. Get any of those wrong and the handle will not fit or will not throw the lock.

We carry the common patterns, so most handle jobs are done in a single visit.

Frequently asked

Why does my window handle spin without locking?

The spindle has usually sheared, or the handle is no longer engaging the gearbox inside the sash. It is a handle replacement in most cases, occasionally a gearbox — either way it is a repair, not a new window.

How much does a new window handle cost?

£45–£95 fitted, including the part. If the underlying problem is the locking gear rather than the handle, expect £80–£180.

Can I replace a window handle myself?

Physically yes, but handles are not universal — spindle size, spindle length, screw centres and handing all vary. Ordering the wrong one is the usual outcome. If the handle is stiff rather than broken, the real fault is often a dropped sash, and swapping the handle will not fix it.
