Same day glass replacement

Broken glass is replaced same day where the pane is a standard type and size, and next day where the unit has to be made. Either way the opening is boarded and secure from the first visit — you are never left with a hole in the wall overnight.

What can genuinely be done same day

Single-glazed float glass, and toughened panes in common stock sizes, can usually be cut and fitted the same day. Anything that needs to be made to order cannot — and any glazier who tells you otherwise is either fitting the wrong glass or has not understood the job.

A sealed double glazed unit has to be cut, spaced, desiccant-filled, sealed and cured. That is a 24–72 hour process, and no amount of urgency compresses it. What we can do is board the opening the same day so the house is warm, dry and secure while the unit is made.

Getting the specification right

  • ToughenedFour to five times stronger than float glass, and it shatters into blunt granules. Required in doors, in panels beside doors, and below 800mm in a window.
  • LaminatedTwo panes bonded to a plastic interlayer. Holds together when broken, so it stays in the frame — the right choice for security and for anywhere a fall is possible.
  • Low-E double glazed unitFor an existing double glazed window. The replacement must match the original thickness, or the beading will not take it.
  • ObscurePilkington obscure patterns for bathrooms — the pattern number matters, and the original is often still available.

Frequently asked

Can you replace broken glass the same day?

Standard float glass and toughened panes in common sizes, yes. A sealed double glazed unit has to be manufactured and typically takes 24–72 hours — no glazier can make one on a van. The opening is boarded and made secure on the first visit either way.

How much does it cost to replace a broken window pane?

Around £120–£280 for a standard pane, and £150–£350 for toughened safety glass. The final figure depends on size, glass type, access and whether the opening needs boarding first.

Does the new glass have to be safety glass?

If it is in a door, in a panel beside a door, or below 800mm from floor level in a window, yes — Approved Document K classes those as critical locations and they must be toughened or laminated, and marked as such.
