A fire door is only a fire door as a complete certified set. The leaf, the frame, the intumescent seals, the hinges and the closer are tested together, and swapping any one of them for something that was not in the test voids the rating. That is why we supply these as a set and will not split them.

FD30 means the assembly resists fire for 30 minutes. You will need it on the door between an integral garage and the house, on flat entrance doors, and throughout most HMOs. If you are not certain whether your opening needs one, ask building control before you order — it is a cheap phone call and an expensive mistake.

How buying supply only works

  1. 1

    Send your sizes

Structural opening width and height, and a photo if you have one. No survey, no appointment, no salesperson at your kitchen table.

  2. 2

    We price it and confirm

A written price with the specification on it, and a real delivery date. If something in your measurements does not add up, we query it before anything is cut.

  3. 3

    We build it

Made to your sizes in our standard range. Standard colours are what hold the one-week turnaround.

  4. 4

    Delivered — or fitted

Delivered to your address or collected from Birmingham. If you want it fitted, that is booked separately and priced on the same quote.

Composite fire doors — questions we get asked

Can I fit a fire door myself?

You can, but it has to be installed exactly as tested — correct gaps, correct hinges, seals intact, closer fitted. Building control will inspect it. If there is any doubt, take the fitting option and we will certify the installation.

What gap should there be around a fire door?

Typically 2–4mm at the head and both stiles. Too tight and it binds; too loose and the intumescent seal cannot bridge the gap when it expands. The certification documents that come with the set give the exact tolerance for that assembly.

Do I need a fire door to my integral garage?

Yes. Under Part B the door between an integral garage and the dwelling must be FD30 and self-closing, and there should be a step up into the house.

Does a fire door have to be self-closing?

In flats and HMOs, yes. For a garage-to-house door in a private dwelling, a closer is required. We supply the closer as part of the set.

Is the one-week lead time the same on fire doors?

Standard FD30 sets in standard sizes, yes. Anything glazed or non-standard is made to order and we will give you a firm date before you pay.
