Sliding sash — what it is

Sliding sash is worth calling out separately. A uPVC vertical slider with a deep bottom rail and mechanical joints is now good enough that it passes in most conservation areas where a chunky welded sash would be refused. If your property is Victorian or Georgian and the originals are past saving, that is the window to look at.

This page shows only the sliding sash designs. If you want to compare across the whole range, go back to all upvc windows.

Questions

Is uPVC still worth fitting?

For a rental, a budget refurbishment or a rear elevation nobody sees, yes — it is the rational choice. Modern profiles insulate as well as aluminium; you are trading frame slimness and lifespan for cost.

Will a uPVC sash window pass in a conservation area?

Often, if it is a mechanically jointed vertical slider with a deep bottom rail and correct sightlines — but never assume. Check the specific consent or Article 4 direction first.

How long do uPVC windows last?

Around 20–25 years. The frame usually outlives the sealed units and the hardware, so a window that has misted or gone stiff is often repairable rather than a replacement.
