Aluminium bi-fold door cost

A three-pane, three-metre aluminium bi-fold typically costs £3,800–£6,000 supplied and fitted. A four-pane, four-metre set runs £5,000–£7,500. Those figures are for the doors — the steel, the threshold and the making good are where budgets get broken.

The costs that aren't in the door price

  • Structural steelAny opening over about 3m needs a properly sized lintel, and a bi-fold needs a stiffer one than a window (span/500 deflection, not span/360). Budget £800–£2,500 including installation and building control.
  • Building controlA new or enlarged structural opening needs approval. Replacing an existing door like-for-like usually doesn't.
  • Threshold and drainageA flush Part M threshold on an exposed elevation needs a drainage channel outside it. Skipping that is the most common cause of water ingress under bi-folds.
  • Making goodPlastering, flooring, external render or brickwork around the new opening.
  • AccessGetting a 4m set of doors into a back garden through a terraced house is genuinely a cost.

Where the door price itself comes from

Panel count drives cost more than width does — each panel adds hinges, a carriage, gaskets and labour. A 3m opening as three panels is cheaper than the same 3m as four narrow panels.

After that: glass (triple, acoustic or toughened all add), colour (dual colour adds 5–10%), threshold type, and whether you specify a traffic door. And the system itself — there is a real gap between a budget bi-fold and a premium one, mostly in the hardware and the gasket detail, and it shows up after five years rather than on day one.

Frequently asked

How much is a 3 metre bi-fold door fitted?

Typically £3,800–£6,000 supplied and fitted for a three-pane set, before any structural work. If a new steel lintel is needed, add roughly £800–£2,500 including building control.

Are bi-folds more expensive than sliding doors?

Usually, and the gap widens with width. A bi-fold has more panels, more hinges and more hardware than a slider of the same size. At 3m they are close; at 5m the slider is normally the cheaper option.

What's the cheapest way to open up a wall?

French doors with fixed side lights, if the opening allows it — far fewer moving parts than a bi-fold and typically half the cost.
